Concrete Removal and Recycling in the Phoenix Metro: What to Know
September 8, 2026 | 5 min read
Concrete is one of the most common materials in demolition and renovation, and one of the most recyclable. Whether you are replacing a driveway, removing a backyard slab or clearing a warehouse floor, understanding how removal works helps you plan and compare quotes.
Typical concrete removal jobs
- Driveways, walkways and patios.
- Pool decks and pool shells.
- Garage and house slabs after a tear-down.
- Commercial slabs, equipment pads and parking areas.
How the work is done
Crews typically saw-cut the edges where concrete meets something that stays, break the slab into manageable pieces with a hydraulic breaker or similar tool, then load and haul the material. Thicker or heavily reinforced concrete takes more equipment and time. Access, such as a narrow gate or block-wall enclosure, can change the method and the cost.
Desert conditions
Hard native soil and caliche beneath slabs can make subgrade work harder, and summer heat shapes crew schedules. Dust control matters too, so water is used during breaking and loading, and larger projects may fall under Maricopa County Air Quality Department dust-control permit requirements.
Recycling
Clean concrete can often be crushed and reused as aggregate or base material, which keeps it out of landfills. Rebar is pulled out and sent to metal recyclers. Whether recycling is practical depends on the facilities available, how clean the material is and the haul distance. Ask your contractor where the concrete goes.
Before you start
- Request locates through Arizona 811 before digging or deep breaking.
- Mark private lines such as irrigation, pool plumbing and electrical conduit.
- Check HOA rules for dumpster placement and work hours.
- Decide what the finished surface should be: gravel, grade, pavers or a new pour.
Questions for your contractor
- Where will the concrete go, and can you provide weight tickets or recycling documentation?
- How will rebar and other metals be handled?
- Who is responsible for locates and any permits?
- What condition will the area be left in after removal?
